Sub Intern Scholarship for Underrepresented Minorities and Women in Orthopaedics
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has a storied history of training highly skilled orthopaedic surgeons from across the state and the country. We believe this is the best kept secret in orthopedic residency and would put our program up against any other program in the country. The only way to truly appreciate all that we have to offer is by coming and spending four weeks rotating with us in Jackson to experience the vast volume and focused orthopaedic education that UMMC has to offer. Furthermore, at UMMC we recognize the strength and value of diversity and are making considerable efforts to increase diversity in our program. To this end, we have created scholarships to encourage women and those minorities underrepresented in Medicine to complete orthopaedic rotations in Jackson. A total of four scholarships in the amount of $3,500 will be awarded for the upcoming year to help offset travel and living expenses during their four-week rotation with our department.
Criteria
Medical students applying for an away rotation to UMMC for the follow year and in good standing are encouraged to apply. The application is available to anyone with particular attention paid to students who are considered underrepresented in medicine as defined by the AAMC, and to female applicants. Applicants will be required to submit the following for the application:
1. Current Curriculum Vitae
2. Letter of Recommendation for any home Orthopedic facultymember
3. Cover letter including a Statement of Interest in our program
4. Unofficial Transcript
Applications are to be sent to orthoeducation@umc.edu with the title of “Sub-Internship Scholarship Application – (insert name here)”.
